Coby Kyros, goedkoop Android tablet

Omdat ik nog eens iets wil maken voor Android is het handig als je zelf een tablet of smartphone hebt die op Android draait zodat je kunt testen.
Tijdens het opschonen van mijn e-mail liep ik tegen het artikel op TechRepublic aan:

Dat zag er goed uit. Door het tablet te rooten kun je er de Google Android Market op krijgen en vervolgens de apps op installeren die je wilt hebben.

Dus via eBay dit apparaat in Amerika gekocht. Redelijk snel in huis, moest nog wel even de importkosten (omdat je het niet binnen de EU hebt gekocht) betalen, 35,70 euro. Dus afgerond in totaal 168 dollar (117 euro) + 36 euro = 153 euro.

Op het xda-developersforum staat een volledige how-to lijst hoe je het tablet kunt rooten en de Market erop krijgt.

Mijn ervaringen;
Stap 1 t/m 5 gaat zonder problemen. Z4Root geinstalleerd, op naar de volgende stappen!
Stap 1 t/m 15 gaat ook goed. Wel even moeten zoeken naar de map usb_driver, die blijkt in extras\google\ te staan.
Stap 1 t/m 15, clockwork-mod installeren. Gaat over het algemeen goed, wel een paar opmerkingen:
* Bij de nieuwere Android SDK staat die adb.exe file op een andere plaats, namelijk in platform-tools\
* Er staat geen flash_image op de tablet! Dus stap 7 werkt niet. Je moet die eerst downloaden, downloadlink staat hier:
Download flash_image

Hij heeft daar als statement neergezet:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image

ik heb gewoon het copy-statement uitgevoerd:
cp /sdcard/flash_image /system/bin/flash_image


Laatste stappen, Market installeren. Gaat allemaal prima!

Hierna heb je dus een tablet waar je op kunt installeren wat je wilt.
Dat doe ik, dus Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck en de Angry Birds zet ik erop (de normale versie, de season-versie en de RIO-versie). Daar krijg ik een kleine teleurstelling, graphics zijn niet goed. Allemaal witte blokken, onspeelbaar. Even op Google gezocht en ja, blijkt gelukkig een fix voor te zijn, je moet de universal versie installeren;

Hierna gaat het goed. Hierna geinstalleerd:
- om een eigen interface te krijgen: Go Launcher
- om je contacten te onderhouden (staat er nog niet op namelijk) Go Contacts

'Gewone' Angry Birds werkt prima. De Season-versie hapert soms lichtjes.
Bij Rio had ik dat er in de algemene lijst en level-lijst de boel nog wel eens wit was, levels waren wel speelbaar. Na afsluiten en opnieuw opstarten van Angry Birds was het probleem weer weg.

Het formaat is een halve iPad. Geluid wat eruit komt is prima. Het scherm is resistief (of hoe je dat ook noemt), dus je moet niet swipen, maar drukken. Is even wennen, maar werkt wel goed. Zit ook nog een goede stylus bij.

Soms is goedkoop duurkoop, je hebt er dan niets aan. Dat is bij de Coby zeker niet het geval. Ik ben er erg blij mee!

That looked really good. By rooting the tablet you can install the Google Android Market
and after that install all the apps you want.

Searched on eBay and found it for a reasonable price in the USA. Fast delivery, after that I had to pay the import-costs because the product came not from a EU-country. Total amount I payed for this tablet is 117 euro and 36 euro importcosts, 153 euro.

tablet and install the Market.

My experiences:
Step 1 t/m 5, all goes well. Z4Root installed, next!
Step 1 t/m 15 also going fine. Had to search for the folder usb_driver, appears to
be in this folder: extras\google\
Step 1 t/m 15, clockwork-mod installation. Most things go OK, but a few notices:
* The new Android SDK places adb.exe in the folder platform-tools\
* There is no flash_image on the tablet! Stap 7 does not work. You have to
download it first, downloadlink can be found here:

The writer of that article uses
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image

I just executed the copy-statement, works for me:
cp /sdcard/flash_image /system/bin/flash_image


Final steps, install the Market. No problem at all!

After this you got a tablet on which you can install what you want.
That is just the thing I do, so Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck and Angry Birds are quickly installed (normal version, season-version and the new RIO-version).
Ay, a little disappointment! Angry Birds are not playable, because I get all white blocks on the screen :( Searched on Google, ah, there is a fix for it! Just install the universal version:

Graphic Fix

After installation Angry Birds can be played.
Then installed:
- for a neat interface: Go Launcher
- maintain your contacts: Go Contacts

'Normal' Angry Birds works ok. Season-version has sometimes some hickups (little slower). The RIO-version had sometimes a 'white-block' problem in the list and on the screen of levels. When I shut down Angry Birds and start it again it works ok.

Size of the tablet is a 50% iPad. Sound is great! Screen is resistive (no swiping, just good pressing). You have to get used to it, but it works ok. There is also a fine stylus included.

I am very happy with this tablet and is worth every euro I spend on it :)
